FOLK MUSIC

The history of rebetiko in Piraeus, in particular the neighborhoods of Drapetsona and Trouba, dates back to 1920. In this area, famous Greek musician such as Stelios Perpiniadis, Nikos Aivaliotis, Giannis Papaioannou, Vasilis Tsitsanis, Stratos Payoumtzis, Markos Vamvakaris, Dim. Gogos or Bayanteras and more, learned bouzouki, wrote, sang and danced. Around 1934, Markos Vamvakaris created a pioneering band named Tetras, the famous of Piraeus, which changed the sound of music with bouzouki and baglama helping to create a new type: the Piraeus rebetiko.
