ΖΟRBA THE GREEK, 1964. One of the best films shot in Greece. Starring Anthony Quinn, Alan Bates, Irene Papas, Giorgos Fountas etc., it is based on the masterful novel by Nikos Kazantzakis and directed by Michael Kakoyannis. The majority of the filming took place in Crete, but the distinctive scene of the acquaintance of the two leading characters was filmed in Piraeus.
PLOT & AWARDS. A young British writer (Alan Bates) comes to Crete to reopen a mine that he has been inherited. He meets and collaborates with Alexis Zorbas (Anthony Quinn), a tough, instinctive man who will reveal to him another aspect of life. Zorbas, an impulsive and adventurous man who knows how to enjoy every moment, becomes his mentor. The plans for the mine fall apart, while the relationship of the author with a beautiful widow ends in tragedy. Nevertheless Zorbas maintains his optimistic faith in life. The film was nominated for seven Oscars (Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Art Direction, Actor, Actress). It won three Oscars (Best Cinematography, Art Direction, Actress), a Golden Globe and the National Board of Review Award.
THE BURGLARS (LE CASSE), 1971. One of the most spectacular car chases of this era is included in this film, which was directed by Henri Verneuil and was shot in Piraeus! All the attractions of the city, from the OLP Pagoda to Castella, run through the screen as the two cars engage in incredible ... tricks. Among others they pass through the underpass of Neo Faliro, they race through the streets of Piraeus, they descend stairs and they interrupt a solemn service in Prophet Elias! In the intervals between shooting, the actors visited the G. Karaiskakis stadium to watch Olympiacos, and it is said that they enjoyed their ouzo at a small tavern in Drapetsona.
