THE MODERN PORT
In the early 19th century the desert, then, and without formulation port of Piraeus was used by travellers to disembark and visit the Acropolis. Who could imagine its subsequent evolution! The modern port of Piraeus, being one of the largest in Europe, is a development hub for both the Greek shipping and the country’s economy. It is the main link between the mainland and the Aegean islands and Crete, while also being the main sea gate of the European Union at its southeastern edge. Piraeus is also an international centre of transit trade. The Passenger Port is divided into areas that serve coasting and crusing.
